As someone who lives south of just about everything, I have a lot of time to think while driving into work every day.

One of the things I think about a lot is why homeowners shouldn’t choose the cheapest option when it coems to remodeling their home.

Why exactly is this? And what factors, other than price, should homeowners consider when it comes to choosing the riht contractor?

Mistakes Homeowners Make When it Comes to Choosing the Right Contractor

When looking through all their bids they’ve received, some homeowners tend to put way too much emphasis on who is cheapest. Instead, they should look at experience, quality, and reputation in deciding which option is going to be best for their home.

Sure, sometimes the cheap option can be the correct one if the project is very simple and they can provide strong referrals, but oftentimes this isn’t the case.

I operate Treasured Spaces as a legitimate business, and in order to do this, sometimes you have to charge more than the other guys. Because of this, we’re not always going to the cheapest contractor, but we will provide your home with the best value.

In other words, we promise the best bang for your buck.

The Trouble With the Cheapest Contractors

Make sure that before you choose the most cost-effective contractor (and if they do a bad job, then, in the long run, they’ll end up costing more) will meet with you in person and will provide you with references. If they give you a hard time about this, then it is time to look elsewhere. This shows that they haven’t had many successful projects in their past.

The contractor who charges the least might not know how to properly run their business. They are simply just offering to charge the least so they can acquire your business. The reason why other more legitimate businesses cost more is that they understand how much everything will cost in order to do the job right.

The job might fall through mid-process and their business might fold at any moment as well if they aren’t properly charging clients the amount that is necessary to run their business.

You want someone who is going to be around 3-5 years down the road in case you need more work done on your home.

Case and Point

One bad story I’ve heard about was from a younger couple who had recently moved into their new home. They wanted to work with us, but we were backed up with work and couldn’t start work on their home until later than they wanted.

As a result, they got a referral from a friend for someone who was cheap. Unfortunately, soon after the contractor began work, they started to regret their decision.

The contractor wasn’t ordering materials on time, wasn’t good at managing the money for the remodel, constantly missed deadlines, and kept making excuses that were not backed up facts.

On top of all of this, the contractor didn’t pay the subcontractors, so the homeowners themselves had to pay the subcontractors directly to get the job done.

All-in-all, it was a terrible experience.

And that’s not what a remodel should be. Remodeling should be a good and fun experience. Sure, you’ll have hiccups along the way, but overall you should look back on the process as a positive experience.

What to Look for With Your Remodeler

When it comes to making the right choice for your contractor, go with someone who is experienced, genuine, and is willing to help you along the way. Avoid contractors who will respond with estimates in a day or two, especially if the job is more complex. This shows they are just trying to win your business with a cheap estimation fast.

Most of the time, they may say they are cheaper, but because they didn’t properly take the time to estimate the job, they run into additional costs they chose not to account for. That’s more unexpected funds out of your pocket.

At Treasured Spaces, we are serious about estimations. We want them to be as accurate as they can to assist you in the budgeting process.

If you’re looking for a fair priced company that will provide value to your home and will offer you a positive remodeling experience, then look no further than Treasured Spaces. We understand the key to operating a successful business is to continue to do good work for our clients that leave them happy.
