So you’ve gotten to the point in your life where your current living space just isn’t big enough. Maybe your family has grown, and your household income is larger, and you know that it is time to either upgrade your home or to find a new space for your and your family to grow up in.

There are definitely pros and cons for each option, and today we’re going to focus on the reasons for staying in your current home!

Take What You Have, and Make it What You Want

If you stay in your current home, you’ll be able to keep the best parts of your house that you love, while fixing up the areas of your home that need improvement. For example, maybe you love your kitchen, but the basement could use some up keeping, especially with your larger family. Remodeling and adding on to your home allows you to stay in the home that has created so many good memories, while still making the changes necessary to make it livable for you and your family.

Stay With Near Your Neighbors and Friends

You’ve probably created some strong bonds with your surrounding neighbors and other friends in the area. If you pack up shop and move elsewhere, you risk losing some of the friendships you’ve created since you starting living in your home. If you do have kids, they likely have neighborhood friends and moving can sometimes be tough on these friendships and kids in general. So stick around and stay for awhile, and keep those close connections you have.

Avoid Changing Schools

Changing schools can also be difficult for your kids. They are already familiar with the school, the teachers, and they have their friends as well, and starting from scratch and becoming accustomed to a new school and peers takes time and can be tough. A common philosophy when it comes to moving with kids is to do so before they start elementary school or during summer break, so they can get a fresh start on a new school year.

Familiarity and Routine

There is something to be said about the familiarity you have with the neighborhood overall, and the daily routines that you go through, such as using a bike trail near your home or walking your dog to their favorite park. While you should always be willing to branch out when needed, sticking to your routine and what is comfortable for you and your family will help avoid the added stress that comes with moving to a new location.

Keep the Character in Your Home and Neighborhood

In older neighborhoods, you have a certain amount of character with each house. In newer neighborhoods, you see too much cookie-cutter designs where every home is made to look exactly like the one next to it. By choosing to stay in your current home, you can preserve the charm and character that can be seen throughout your street.

Your Full-Grown, Mature, and Beautiful Trees

If you’re fortunate enough to have some mature trees on your property, make sure you don’t take them for granted when deciding whether or not to move. At newer lots, you’re likely to only find young, skinny trees on your property. Not only do your full-grown trees look great in your yard, but they also provide plenty of shade in the summer. Many people don’t realize how much they love their trees until they are gone, so keep that in mind when making your decision.

Building Up

When it comes to adding on to your home, you can always build up. While your space may be limited around you in terms of your yard and where you can build out, building up is, for the most part, always an option. Because you don’t have to worry about adding a new foundation, so you’re not dealing with as many setbacks.
